Paper drill bits for the standard fitting type of paper drills (this covers a large list of manufacturers, see Technical tab for list). These are also known as hollow drill bits as the paper waste is taken up into the hollow inside of the drill bit.
- Fitting type: Standard (see Technical tab for list of brands)
- Length: 85mm
- Cutting depth: 50mm
- Coating: None – see related products for Teflon or Tungsten coated bits
- Note: 3mm and 4mm drill bits have a reduced cutting depth of 30mm to prevent breakages
How do I choose the right fitting and size drill bit?
You will need to check carefully to ensure you have the correct fitting drill bit for your machine. You should be able to find the name of the manufacturer on your paper drill and then work out which fitting you need. Standard fitting drill bits cover 10+ manufacturers, or we list other brands of drill bits separately.
Fittings vary a lot and there are over 20 different manufacturers of paper drills. If you have any questions which fitting you need just contact us to ask.
You then need to select the appropriate drill bit size (hole diameter) for your project. If you are using a 5mm diameter swatch fastener you will need a 6mm drill bit to ensure the fastener can be easily fixed and have plenty of space to move. Drill bits come in various diameters from 3mm up to 12mm depending on machine brand, so choose one that matches the size of the hole you need.
Teflon coated (more slippery) and Tungsten coated (stronger) versions of the standard fitting drill bits are available below.
Getting the best result when drilling paper requires care to ensure accurate and clean results. After you’ve ensured you have the correct fitting drill bit and the right diameter size for the hole you want to drill you are ready to go. We’ve put together some best practice tips for this:
- Prepare the Paper:
- Stack the paper neatly and ensure it is properly aligned before drilling. Use a clamp or paper jogger to keep the sheets in place and prevent shifting during drilling.
- Mark Hole Positions:
- Mark the exact positions where you want to drill holes on the stack of paper.
- Drill on a Stable Surface:
- The paper drill needs to be fixed to a stable and flat surface to maintain accuracy and prevent unnecessary movement during drilling.
- Adjust the Depth:
- Some paper drills allow you to adjust the drilling depth. Set the depth according to the thickness of the paper stack to avoid drilling too deep or too shallow. Different drill manufacturers will have different depths available. Standard fitting drill bits typically have a cutting depth of up to 50mm, Iram can be much deeper.
- Start with a Test Sheet:
- Before drilling the entire stack, you could perform a test drill on a single sheet to ensure the drill bit is aligned correctly.
- Drill in Stages:
- If you have a large stack of paper, drill the holes in smaller batches or stages. This helps maintain accuracy and prevents the drill bit from becoming dull prematurely or shattering under too much drilling pressure.
- Clear Waste Material:
- Regularly clear the waste material from the drill bit to prevent clogging and ensure clean cuts. Use a brush or air blower for this purpose. Be careful with smaller, 3 or 4mm drill bits, these can be more delicate to clean.
- Keep the Drill Bit Sharp:
- Sharpen the drill bit as needed to maintain clean and precise cuts. Dull bits can lead to ragged edges and may cause the paper to tear.
- Use Lubrication:
- Depending on the material being drilled and the type of paper drill, using a lubricant like waxing paper or a silicon spray (see in related products) can help improve the drilling process and extend the life of the drill bit.
- Safety Precautions:
- Always follow safety guidelines provided by the manufacturer. Wear appropriate safety gear, such as safety glasses, to protect your eyes.
- Regular Maintenance:
- Periodically check and maintain the paper drill. Ensure that all parts are in good condition, and replace any worn-out components to ensure optimal performance.
By following these tips, you can ensure consistent accuracy while drilling and prolong the life of your drill bits.
