Clean white de-icing rock salt in large 24kg bags. Get rid of snow and ice around premises walkways and car parks rapidly.
This is also known as gritting salt or rock salt and can be used instead of traditional brown gritting salt to create less mess. It is a BS3247 certified high quality salt in a pure white colour, so where some gritting salts contain sand or small gravel and is a brown colour, white salt leaves less mess and is far easier to clear up. Using white de-icing salt instead of grit has several advantages, depending on the application:
- White de-icing salt dissolves quickly in water, breaking down ice and snow faster than grit, which primarily relies on providing traction rather than melting ice.
- Leaves less residue compared to grit, which can create a muddy, messy surface once the snow and ice melt.
- This makes white salt ideal for areas where cleanliness matters, such as:
- Residential pathways and driveways
- Commercial and retail parking areas
- Public pavements, walkways and entrances
- Grit is a mixture of sand, gravel, and other coarse materials designed to increase traction, but it doesn’t melt the ice. It can be abrasive and cause wear and tear on surfaces like asphalt, concrete, or paving stones.
- White salt, while potentially corrosive to metals and concrete over time, is less damaging to the surface itself compared to the grinding effect of grit.
- Grit may clog drains and require additional clean up after the ice melts, as the sand and small stones accumulate in gutters, streets, and pathways.
- White salt dissolves completely into water, minimizing clean up.
- White salt is effective for both preventive applications (spreading before snow falls to stop ice formation) and active de-icing (after snow and ice have accumulated).
- Grit is primarily useful for traction and is less effective at breaking down ice.
When to consider grit instead:
- In extremely cold temperatures where salt is less effective (below -6°C/21°F for regular rock salt).
- For traction-only needs, such as on steep inclines or untreated rural roads.
- In areas with environmental restrictions where salt use may harm nearby ecosystems.
